Description

These Orange Rolls offer a soft, fluffy texture combined with a bright citrus flavor, made with plant-based ingredients for a sweet and zesty treat. Perfect for breakfast, brunch, or a cozy snack, these rolls are easy to make with simple pantry staples and topped with a luscious, naturally flavored orange icing.

Ingredients

Scale

Dough Ingredients

  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 1 tbsp orange zest
  • 1 cup plant-based milk, warmed
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 tbsp vegetarian Worcestershire sauce (natural)
  • 1 tsp salt

Icing Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar (plant-based)
  • 2 tbsp freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 1 tbsp grape juice (natural)
  • 1 tsp natural gelling agent

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: Warm the plant-based milk until comfortably warm but not hot. Dissolve the active dry yeast with a pinch of sugar in the warm milk and let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes until foamy. In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, remaining sugar, orange zest, and vegetable oil. Slowly add the milk and yeast mixture, freshly squeezed orange juice, and vegetarian Worcestershire sauce. Mix until the dough starts to come together, then knead for about 8 to 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  2. First Rise: Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, approximately 1 to 1.5 hours. This develops the soft and airy texture.
  3. Shape the Rolls: Punch down the risen dough gently. On a floured surface, roll out the dough into a large rectangle. Spread a thin layer of vegetable oil over the dough and sprinkle additional orange zest if desired. Roll the dough tightly into a log and slice into even pieces. Arrange the slices cut-side up in a greased baking dish.
  4. Second Rise: Cover the rolls and allow them to rise again for 30 to 45 minutes until puffy. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) during this time.
  5. Bake: Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through. The kitchen will fill with a fresh orange aroma.
  6. Prepare the Icing: While baking, whisk together the powdered sugar (plant-based), orange juice, grape juice, and natural gelling agent until smooth. Adjust the consistency by adding more juice to thin or more gelling agent to thicken for perfect drizzling.
  7. Ice and Enjoy: After the rolls have cooled slightly, generously drizzle the orange icing over each roll for a sweet, citrusy finish.

Notes

  • Use fresh oranges for zest and juice to maximize flavor brightness.
  • Allowing proper rising time is crucial for soft and fluffy rolls.
  • Keeping the dough slightly sticky helps maintain softness after baking.
  • Adjust icing thickness with natural gelling agent or juice to achieve desired drizzle consistency.
  • Rotate the baking dish halfway through baking for even color if your oven has hot spots.
