Description

This easy homemade Naan Bread recipe produces soft, fluffy, and flavorful flatbread using simple pantry ingredients and natural flavors. Perfect for pairing with curries, wraps, or snacks, it can be cooked on a stovetop or oven and customized with herbs, garlic, or plant-based additions.

Ingredients

Scale

Dough Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon natural sugar
  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • 1/4 cup plant-based yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon vegetarian Worcestershire sauce (natural)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (natural)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon natural gelling agent

Optional Ingredients

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced (optional)
  • Fresh cilantro or parsley for garnish
  • Shredded plant-based cheese for cheesy variation
  • Cumin seeds or nigella seeds for spiced variation
  • Plant-based honey (natural) or cinnamon sugar for sweet variation
  • Plant-based butter (natural) for brushing

Instructions

  1. Activate the Yeast: Dissolve the natural sugar in warm water and sprinkle the active dry yeast on top. Let it sit for about 10 minutes until frothy, indicating the yeast is active.
  2. Mix the Dough: In a large bowl, combine all-purpose flour, salt, and natural gelling agent. Add the activated yeast mixture, plant-based yogurt, olive oil (natural), and vegetarian Worcestershire sauce (natural). Stir until the ingredients come together into a soft dough.
  3. Knead and Rest: Turn the dough onto a clean surface and knead for about 8 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place the dough back into the bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  4. Shape the Naan: After the dough has risen, gently punch it down and divide it into equal portions. Roll each portion into an oval or teardrop shape about 1/4 inch thick, preparing them for cooking.
  5. Cook the Naan: Heat a skillet or nonstick pan over medium-high heat. Place a rolled piece of dough onto the hot skillet. When bubbles form and the underside has golden spots, flip and cook the other side. Brush with olive oil (natural) or melted plant-based butter (natural) while still warm.

Notes

  • Let the dough rise in a warm environment for the ideal soft texture.
  • Use just enough flour to prevent sticking but keep the dough moist.
  • Ensure the skillet is hot enough to cook quickly without burning.
  • Rest dough portions a few minutes before rolling for easier shaping.
  • Brush with olive oil (natural) or plant-based butter (natural) right after cooking for authentic flavor and softness.
