Description

Crispy Baked Honey Mustard Tofu Tenders are a plant-based snack or meal featuring extra-firm tofu coated in a sweet and tangy honey mustard marinade, baked to golden crispness with a crunchy panko coating and tender inside. This simple recipe uses everyday ingredients and is easy to prepare, making it perfect for a wholesome, protein-packed appetizer or main dish that everyone will enjoy.

Ingredients

Scale

Tofu and Marinade

  • 14 oz extra-firm tofu
  • 3 tbsp honey (natural)
  • 2 tbsp Dijon mustard (natural)
  • 1 tbsp vegetarian Worcestershire sauce (natural)
  • 2 tbsp plant-based milk

Crispy Coating

  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour (use gluten-free if desired)
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp natural gelling agent
  • 1/2 cup plant-based milk
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs (plant-based, use gluten-free if desired)

Instructions

  1. Prepare and Press the Tofu: Drain the extra-firm tofu and press it gently between paper towels or a tofu press to remove excess moisture. This helps create a crispy exterior when baking.
  2. Make the Honey Mustard Marinade: In a bowl, whisk together the honey (natural), Dijon mustard (natural), vegetarian Worcestershire sauce (natural), and a splash of plant-based milk until smooth and well combined.
  3. Slice and Marinate Tofu Tenders: Cut the pressed tofu into even strips resembling tenders. Place them in the marinade, making sure each piece is fully coated. Let marinate for at least 15 minutes to absorb the flavors.
  4. Prepare the Crispy Coating: In a shallow bowl, mix all-purpose flour, garlic powder, paprika, black pepper, and natural gelling agent. In a second bowl, set aside plant-based milk. In a third bowl, place the panko breadcrumbs (plant-based).
  5. Coat the Tofu Tenders: Dip each marinated tofu tender first into the flour mixture, then plant-based milk, and finally coat well with panko breadcrumbs, pressing gently to help coating adhere. For extra crunch, repeat the dipping process once more.
  6. Bake to Perfection: Arrange coated tofu tenders on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, spacing them to avoid overcrowding. Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 25-30 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden brown and crispy.

Notes

  • Press tofu thoroughly to remove excess water and enhance crispiness.
  • Cut tofu into uniform strips to ensure even cooking.
  • For crunchier tenders, do a double coating by repeating the dipping steps.
  • Use natural gelling agent for improved texture and coating hold.
  • Do not overcrowd the baking tray to ensure even crispness.
