Description

Easy Apple Pie Baked French Toast is a warm, comforting, and flavorful breakfast that blends tender cinnamon-spiced apples with soft baked bread soaked in creamy custard, finished with a drizzle of natural plant-based syrup. Perfect for weekend brunches or special occasions, this recipe is simple to prepare, customizable, and delightfully delicious.

Ingredients

Scale

Bread and Custard

  • 8 thick slices day-old brioche or challah bread
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups plant-based milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (natural)
  • 1 teaspoon vegetarian Worcestershire sauce (natural)
  • 2 tablespoons plant-based butter (for greasing)

Apple Topping

  • 3 medium crisp apples (such as Granny Smith), peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon (natural)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons plant-based syrup (natural)
  • 1/2 teaspoon natural gelling agent

For Serving

  • Plant-based syrup (natural), for drizzling
  • Optional garnishes: cinnamon (natural) sprinkle, toasted walnuts or pecans, fresh apple slices, powdered plant-based sugar (natural)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Apples: Peel, core, and thinly slice the apples. In a skillet, gently cook the apples with cinnamon (natural), lemon juice, and plant-based syrup (natural) until tender but still firm. Stir in the natural gelling agent to thicken slightly. Remove from heat and let cool.
  2. Make the Custard Mixture: In a bowl, whisk together eggs, plant-based milk, vanilla extract (natural), and vegetarian Worcestershire sauce (natural) until well combined.
  3. Assemble the French Toast: Lightly grease a baking dish with plant-based butter. Arrange half of the bread slices in the dish, then layer half of the cooked apple mixture on top. Repeat with remaining bread and apples. Pour the custard evenly over the layers, pressing down gently to help the bread soak the mixture.
  4. Bake to Golden Perfection: Cover the dish with foil and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake an additional 15 minutes or until the top is golden and slightly crisp.
  5. Serve with Plant-Based Syrup: Drizzle generously with plant-based syrup (natural) and serve warm.

Notes

  • Use day-old or slightly stale bread to absorb the custard well without becoming soggy.
  • Do not skip the natural gelling agent to maintain the apple topping’s ideal texture and prevent excess moisture.
  • Press gently after pouring custard to ensure even soaking.
  • Let the assembled dish rest for 10 minutes before baking for deeper flavor and better texture.
  • Use fresh, crisp apples to hold texture and balance sweetness.
